A downtown skyline over a river at dusk with traffic crossing the bridges 4 seasonal problems

01 / Austin, TX

Austin is hard on paint. Specifically.

20 min from downtown · 12 services · from $149

Not "harsh weather" in the way every detailing page says it. Four specific things, on a calendar, each of which does a different kind of damage — and each of which changes what we recommend and when we recommend booking it.

02 / The four things

The four things.

4 things · on a calendar

December – February

Ashe juniper pollen — cedar fever

Packs cabin filters and the vent runs behind the dash. It is not a paint problem, it is an air problem, and no amount of wiping the dash reaches it.

What we do about it

Interior extraction with the vents done properly. Book it in February, when the count drops, not in January while it is still landing.

March – May

Hail

Central Texas runs its severe season in spring. A correction booked in April can be undone by one storm in May.

What we do about it

We will tell you to wait. Correction work goes in the calendar for June, and PPF — which does absorb small impacts — goes in first if you park outside.

June – September

UV and hard water

Austin water comes off limestone, so it is hard, and at 100°F it evaporates before it runs off. What is left is a mineral deposit that etches into clear coat.

What we do about it

A coating so the water sheets instead of clinging, and never letting a car dry in the sun in August.

All year

I-35 and MoPac

The construction on I-35 through central Austin has been continuous for years, and it throws gravel. This is the single most common reason an Austin car needs its front end refinished.

What we do about it

Paint protection film on the front. Not a coating — a coating is 2–3 µm and a stone does not care.

Where our customers actually are.

MoPac northbound after 4pm makes any of those twenty minutes worse. We are appointment-only and the appointment is the whole day, so it does not matter much — but if you are dropping off before work, come up Burnet rather than MoPac.

What we will not do.

2 things we will not do

We will not correct a car in April and call it protected.

Hail season runs through May. If you park outside, film goes on first and correction waits.

We are not a mobile service and we will not come downtown.

Correction needs controlled lighting and a level floor. Anyone doing multi-stage correction in your apartment garage on Rainey is doing something else and calling it correction.

4.2 µm removed · 4 days

A downtown-garaged car, which is the specific Austin situation: it lives indoors and still came in with etched water spots, because the wash it was going through used the same hard water everything here uses.

We photograph the work, not the car. Customer vehicles and plates stay off this site. The frames show the operation; the record beside them carries the vehicle, the paint and the reading.

Frames are labelled During or Finished for what they actually show. A comparison slider needs the same frame twice, shot under the same lighting — until those pairs exist this is a gallery, not a before and after, and it says so.

07 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

3 questions · 2-week lead

Do you serve downtown and South Austin?

Yes, and people drive up. Twenty to twenty-eight minutes each way. Because the car is with us for a full day or more, the drive is a one-time cost rather than a daily one, and it is the reason we do not run a second location — one bay with controlled lighting beats two with fluorescent tubes.

Is Austin water really that bad for paint?

Yes, and it is measurable rather than a sales line. Austin's supply is drawn from the Colorado River through limestone country, which makes it hard. In August it evaporates off a hot panel before it can run off, and the minerals it leaves behind etch the clear coat. That is why spotting here is a summer problem specifically, and why the fix is a coating that makes water sheet rather than bead in place.

When is the worst time to book correction work?

March through May. Not because we are busy — because hail season can undo it. We will say so and offer you a date in June.

Appointment only, 2-week typical lead time on coating work.
